Watching the recent sporting events of the Australian Open Tennis competition and the Winter Olympics, I was reflecting on all of the work and preparation that the athletes have had to do to reach the top of their field. It’s clear that they don’t get to this level of performance by chance or circumstance, but instead a high degree of intentionality in their preparation. Likewise, in a career we need to have the same discipline if we are to meet our professional goals. Have you thought about your own goals beyond the requirements of your annual work appraisal? Have you carved out some time to sit down and think more strategically about your career goals for this year, and if so do you have a plan to achieve them?
I had set myself the goal of completing my Graduate Certificate in Careers Education and Development at RMIT University to formally validate my years of recruiting and human resources experience. It may not be an Olympic medal but I am absolutely delighted to have recently received my graduation certificate! I felt an immense sense of achievement after the many hours of hard work, studying the course material and completing assignments and projects in the field of career coaching, that I’m so passionate about. I am thankful to everyone who encouraged and supported me, from the clients and companies that I had the pleasure of working with, to my tutors, lecturers, peers, team members and my dear family and friends.
